Dr. Petty was organizer and founding President of the Association of Pulmonary Program Directors and had served as President of the American College of Chest Physicians. He was the founding Chairman of the National Lung Health Education Program. He was also the founder of a quarterly newsletter, Lung Cancer Frontiers, and was the editor from its inception through 2007.
Thomas L. Petty, M.D., a pulmonologist, was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He was also Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver. Dr. Petty, an international authority on respiratory disease, had published over 800 articles in journals.
He was the author or editor of 45 books or editions. The Aspen Lung Conference was named after Dr. Petty in 1991. Dr. Petty was organizer and founding President of the Association of Pulmonary Program Directors and had served as President of the American College of Chest Physicians.

In August 2009, Dr. Petty began a second edition of the Adventures of an Oxy-Phile. He reached out to a number of potential contributors and was thrilled by their interest.
The book would include updated information on the use of oxygen by experts in the field, as well as inspiring stories by patients and informative chapters by leading pulmonary colleagues. Following Dr. Petty's death on December 12, 2009, those close to him completed the book and it is now at the printers.
